Gather those cardboard boxes you've been storing in the basement, attic and garage — you're going to the cardboard box derby. Cardboard box derbies have become a popular activity at this time of year, and both Camelback and Blue Mountain are holding cardboard box derbies this weekend. Imagination is all you need for this competition, along with a strong glue and tape to construct a box built for speed as well as looks. Duct tape and Gorilla Glue are both suggested for construction by event coordinators. Entries must be constructed of corrugated cardboard boxes, using only paper, glue, tape, string and, of course, a spiffy paint job. All other materials, including industrial pressed cardboard, plastic, wood, staples, rope and twine, will result in disqualification. Vehicles must have a front, rear, bottom and two sides. Believe it or not, any box deemed unsafe by inspectors will also be disqualified. All entrants must cross the finish line with all crew members in the box to qualify for prizes. Whether you complete the race in your box, or fall apart on the way down, participants must remove the remnants of their vehicles from the slope. Thinking outside the box can improve the chances of being awarded a prize. Prizes are awarded in several categories, including Most Creative Vehicle (to the finish line); Best in Show (for fastest unofficial run, team spirit and crowd favorite); and Best Dismount (the team or vehicle that wrecks the least gracefully). So, if you are headed for a wreck, make it good — you might still win a prize.
