Mercury has released vehicles under the Ford platform since 1939, typically filling a near-luxury class in between the economy line Ford vehicles and the luxury Lincoln vehicles. While models produced in the 1950's and 1960's stretched and lowered the Ford style of vehicles, creating unique and interesting cars, more recently many models have been slightly higher end versions of Ford's designs. Sales and production of Mercury vehicles peaked in 1978 and again in 1993, but today approximately 200,000 vehicles are produced each year in this line. The line today is characterized by luxury, comfort, and an array of models. 2008 models include the Mariner, Montegro, Monterey, Milan, Mountaineer and Grand Marquis, as well as a re-release of the successful Sable. An eco-friendly hybrid version of the Mariner is even available. Styling and branding today includes a distinctive waterfall style front grille, block lettering, and a new advertising campaign focused on women.
